    Affordable Surveilance, June 22, 2014

This DVR supports FOUR cameras (buy a different unit if you want eight cameras). (some of the other reviews are a bit confusing by mentioning that you can expand this kit)

The DVR has a 500 GB drive which is *plenty* of space for *motion* detected video. Yes, if you constantly record four high resolution cameras at top quality settings you’ll eat up disk space rapidly (reckon about a standard DVD that uses about 4 GB for a two hour movie). There is an eSata port for expanding this unit with an external hard drive or you can replace the internal drive with a higher capacity drive but for typical usage I can’t imagine you’d really need more than the built in 500 GB.

A USB port can be used for connecting an external drive (or Flashdrive) to copy (backup) video.

The cameras do quite well and the resolution is 960 x 480.

Running the wiring around your house and through walls is probably the most hard aspect of utilizing this surveillance kit.

The built in software runs honestly easily via the included mouse (or you can do it clunky with the front panel buttons or remote control). Beware: it can be frustrating to get your HDTV to detect the signal correctly at first (I finished up connecting it via a VGA cable and then setting the resolution, then switching back to HDMI).

Perhaps the coolest feature is to be able to connect this to your home network and control it from your computer! (I would recommend hard wiring it and not trying to use wireless.)

Fantastic product! I’m looking forward to comparing it to the “Defender 21158 Sentinel Pro” which I should receive in a few days.

    Very Nice, June 26, 2014

This came in two separate boxes. One box contains the DVR. The other contains the cameras and cables.

The dimensions of this 500gb DVR are about the size of today’s modern dvd or bluray players. It is not full width for a rack.

The DVR box comes with an hdmi cable, remote and batteries, Ethernet cable, a Swann branded mouse, and of course the power plug. The DVR also came with 8 security stickers.

I hooked everything up without a camera and it booted to a setup screen. At this time the HDD light on the front of the box was red. Initially I though a red light meant there was an issue, but it doesn’t. It just uses red. Once recording starts it flashes to indicate activity.

I opened the manual…and Page 4 says “Congratulations…”, followed by “Oh my, this is a huge manual. How long will this take?” A product with a sense of humor is refreshing and unexpected. It then says it will take a couple of hours for basic setup. This, of course, probably doesn’t account for running the cables in your particular situation and location. In reality, once you hook everything up, including the cameras (again not counting time for running wires neatly), it might take you an hour to setup from beginning to end.

The cameras came with an additional 8 stickers. The camera box included 4 cameras, 1 camera power plug and one 4-way power splitter for the cameras. Basically, you are only ever running a single wire to each location where you want to install a camera. Power and video flow over the same cable. Each cable splits out into two wires at each end.

All cables are very small, with the exception of the camera extension (video/power) cables. This means the DVR will need to be near two power outlets or a surge protector and near to your network switch (using the provided ethernet cable and power adapters). There is a power block for the DVR and one for the cameras. You “inject” power at the DVR end of the system and run your extension wires to the camera locations. This is why I say the two outlets need to be near the DVR unit. The power block wires are small. It makes more sense once you see it in person. Once powered up, the camera starts recording to the HDD immediately after sensing any motion.

The on-screen menu indicates that the monitor’s video resolution can be anywhere from 1024×768 to 1920×768. Set it to match your monitor. HD TVs are preferred using the supplied HDMI cable, but I used a computer monitor and VGA.

Out of the box, I had 455 GB of recording space by the time I had set up everything and after it had detected some motion of me moving the camera around during setup on my desk.

It supports DDNS. It also supports email alerts, which the manual walk you through setting up using gmail. This is really very user friendly. I setup a new gmail account as the manual suggested.

Overall, some of the setup may look intimating, but the manual has a sense of humor, reads in a friendly way, and makes setup quick and simple.

Excellent, but not for long distances, June 24, 2014

I live in the country and intended this unit to be placed about 800′ feet from my house. To get this to work, I would have had to buy 12 sets of cables for each camera!

It may be helpful to others to know that the longest cables I found were 65′ feet long and are not recommended to be added in a series due to signal degradation.

So if you are plotting to use this for out buildings or other areas, you shouldn’t really be focused on buying add ons to supplement the system.

Unfortunately, I haven’t found an alternative that is suited for my situation. But maybe my lack of forethought will help other buyers.
