Terrible firmware – no update in sight, November 7, 2015

Overall a excellent system, if it complied with soecs. There is a known bug in the firmware (xxxx GA3.1) that does not enforce the wide dynamic range, brightness, etc. to be set and maintained. Can adjust to a gorgeous picture, but the cameras revert to default values after some hours. But, the stored picture parameters are saved. Go figure. Otherwise a excellent system if you have no need to adjust picture values. Swann knows of this issue but cannot provide an estimate of when a new firmware will be issued.

This has now been corrected through a camera firmware update provided by Swann. Albeit it took a while to get them updated, they system works fantastic now. A solid 4

Fantastic cameras and system so far. A few things are lacking in the supplied documents but.

1. No info at all on how to set up the system to your router. It tells you what the port is for and clarifies the data fields in the menus but nothing past that.

2. No mention of why the reset button exists or the power cable on the cameras. To that end the CAT 5 connection from the camera is bulky and even with a 1 inch drilled hole it is a tight fit. All of my cables are behind the walls so it makes a difference. A wider base plate would alleviate this or a smaller connector.
The cameras retain the memory of some of your settings and although you can see and edit them in the NVR system page the changes wont remain it will revert back. Hence the need for the rest button. Not a huge issue but if you like to name your cameras and have them in sequential order then be sure you are aware of this fact.

3. Lastly it comes with 60ft of CAT 5E cable for each camera which is not enough for the vast majority of outside camera locations so I bought 8 100ft cables at $25 each from Home Depot.

TIP mark all of your cables along the routing at intervals so that you can ID them during the process, it makes life simpler.

Have had this for two days. Have tried other systems and was not pleased with anything until now. At first thought I had a dead unit. Nope my monitor choice was poor(the larger the better). So far camera’s are the best I have seen yet. Software is more than adequate. This unit may have updated software. Had no problems with software or hardware. Instructions are lacking (SMALL font)in the box. Go to www.scann.com and check out the downloads. Its all there. You had better have had computer experience to complete the set up. Swapology. If that don’t work try another way. PoE hookups are the best. One wire to each camera. I used Cat 5 and Cat 6 cable(cheap to buy and replace). Please follow Swann’s advice hook up on the table and try things out. Place a camera in a enclosed closet(NO light) hung a picture on clothes and you could make it out enough to identify it. Night time is black/white. Daytime is color. Set camera’s to record motion only. Maybe not as quick response as one might want. Camera position is very vital. I can tell that already. It did record motion of at least fifty feet or more. Camera’s light up multiple red dots in the dark. Hard to see but its there.The software has its quirk’s but get used to it! I reckon Swann has done a very excellent job on this unit. Have tried other units and this is the best for the money. The more I work with it the more I like this unit. Eight channels eight camera’s. That is enough for me! Getting this ready to install and to see who visits shop after hours and does not bring tools back.
